East Texas Golden Gloves returns to Tyler early next month

Progess staff reports

TYLER — The 72nd Annual East Texas Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament will be held at the Herrington Patriot Center on the campus of the University of Texas-Tyler on Feb. 2-4.

The first bell will ring at 7 p.m. each night, with tickets ranging from $10 to $250 (ringside tables).

The tourney is hosted by the East Texas Golden Gloves Association, a non-profit entity, and is fully sanctioned by the Southwestern Association of USA Boxing.

According to officials with the organization, boxing continues to show healthy growth in East Texas, both in the raw number of fighters participating in the sport, as well as many of those pugilists' skill level.

Last year an East Texas boxer was a member of the 2011 Texas State Golden Gloves team that went to the national meet in Indianapolis.

Texas Golden Gloves is divided into eleven districts.

The East Texas Golden Gloves district covers the counties of Anderson, Angelina, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Delta, Fannin, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hopkins, Houston, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Marion, Morris, Nacogdoches, Panola, Polk, Rains, Red River, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, Smith, Titus, Trinity, Tyler, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood.

Any gym or boxer that resides in the East Texas Golden Gloves district must compete in the East Texas Golden Gloves Tournament to advance to the Texas State level.
