2011 East Texas Golden Gloves State Champions
The East Texas Golden Gloves Boxing Team went to compete in the 75th Annual Texas State Golden Gloves held in Forth Worth Texas at the Will Roger Memorial Center, John Justin Arena on March 2-5, 2011. The East Texas Golden Gloves Association was proud to send eight young men to the state level tournament, and was proud of their performances. There were many close bouts and in the end, East Texas had one boxer still standing in the finals on Saturday night. This is the first time in 15 years that East Texas had a finalist in any weight division in the Texas State Golden Gloves Tournament. Shamarian "Duke" Snider was one of the two finalist in in the 201 lb. weight division also know as the heavyweight division. It was one of the most exciting fights of the night as Duke took on the home town boxer, Ladell Williams who was 2010 state champion. The bout went all three rounds and had the crowd cheering wildly in each round. The stadium roared with boo's of disapproval when Williams was announced the winner in a split decision. Jeanie Sharp, President of Texas State Golden Gloves said East Texas should be proud of having Shamarian Snider represent our area in the finals. Geri Jones, East Texas Golden Gloves President said she was honored to send the team and coaches that represented us at the state tournament and that Duke did an outstanding job. Shawn Vasocou, the head coach for the East Texas Golden Gloves team was proud of his team and is already hard at work helping these and the other boxers at Tyler Boxing Gym train for their next fight.
